Of the 100 counties in the state, Clay County had the most land and rural real estate for sale. The most expensive property listed for sale in North Carolina on Lands of America recently was $49 million, although the median price for land and other rural acreage for sale in North Carolina was $242,298. The average price of land and rural property for sale in North Carolina was $532,691. There was 2,337 acres of sold land in North Carolina recorded last month through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects an increase in sales activity over data from July 2018. The total value of this sold land and rural real estate was $9.3 million. Clay County recorded the most land sales recently in the state. North Carolina offers year-round opportunities to fish and hunt, including prime fly-fishing in over 3,000 miles of mountain trout streams in the western third of the state. Throw in Atlantic Ocean deep-sea fishing and some two million acres of game lands open to hunters, anglers and trappers-and you've got one serious outdoor sports-obsessed state. As befits a state with excellent hunting for big and small game like deer, waterfowl and wild turkey, hunting land was the most common type of land for sale in North Carolina. In terms of its size, North Carolina is the country's 28th-largest state, covering an area of 53,821 square miles (34 million acres). In total, 48,618 square miles (90 percent) of the state is land, while the remaining 5,201 square miles is covered by water.
