Based on recent Lands of America data, North Carolina ranks third in the United States for the combined number of land listings currently for sale in the state. By overall acreage of land for sale, North Carolina ranks 18th. Lands of America data records more than $11 billion in land and rural real estate for sale in the Tar Heel State. The total size of North Carolina land for sale is about 473,000 acres. Of the 100 counties in North Carolina, Iredell County had the most land and rural real estate for sale. There were 2,282 acres of sold land in North Carolina recorded in January 2019 through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects a 19 percent increase in sales activity over the previous month, with a combined land value of $7 million for all property and land sold in the state. The most land sales in the state last month were located in Columbus County. North Carolina offers year-round opportunities to fish and hunt, including prime fly-fishing in over 3,000 miles of mountain trout streams in the western third of the state. Throw in Atlantic Ocean deep-sea fishing and some two million acres of game lands open to hunters, anglers, and trappers and you've got one serious outdoor sports-obsessed state. In terms of size, North Carolina is the country's 28th-largest state, covering an area of 53,821 square miles (34 million acres). Of this area, 48,618 square miles of the state is land, while the remaining 5,201 square miles is covered by water. Wildlife to be found on land for sale in North Carolina include whitetail deer, turkey, bear, ducks, and dove. Anglers have their choice of bass, trout, catfish, and walleye.
