The evidence of Native American use of this ground is extensive and when the original Settlers arrived they chose this area of land for their homesteads. One of the upper basins that had a one room County School was named "Hamby Town" and the lower basin had a County Store with a US Post Office (18_ until 195_) and was named "Mt. Zion". The original settlers are buried in the graveyard on the property and also laid to rest there is the author given credit for penning the "Ballad of Tom Dooley". The events that inspired the song occurred in this community. Daniel Boone chose to build four homes and spend the major portion of his adult life a few miles down the creek on th Yadkin River.
